Francis Glancy: Artist

I am interested in the notion of the strange in the familiar and through my work I try to capture an atmosphere of mystery and intrigue weaving loose narrative threads.
Informed by institutional buildings and interiors I take a subversive view of these overlooked spaces which we inhabit daily most of our lives, finding myself drawn to the secrecy of a closed door or the solitude of a dark filled corridor.
The use of opened and closed doors is a key framing device employed throughout most of my work. The viewer, hovering in the doorway of the room or corridor, is placed in the dual position of observer and participant. Is she/he the examiner of the series' title or an occupant of an adjacent space, similarly both self-contained and vulnerable?
Passing through doors, into different worlds is a subject I find extremely fascinating. Opening doors onto new realities whilst doors close on hidden interiors, carrying a mood of tension and suspense and becoming just as foreboding as the world they are hiding from the viewer.
